About the London Hotel sector London is perhaps the most expensive city in the world to stay in, and everyone is searching for cheap hotels. However, they don't mean "downmarket", they mean inexpensive hotels or discount hotels with steep price cuts from their advertised rack rate. The rack rate has to be the biggest lie in the industry, few pay it and fewer expect to pay it, but it is a starting point designed to make the advertised rate look like a bargain rate indeed. They aren't bargain hotels in real life. London also has one of the highest number of hotel rooms available in any city in the world, but high levels of visitors, from abroad and from within the UK, means there is always high demand. That's a real problem for an independent hotel struggling against the chains. The way forward is to use a web site to make the hotel look as attractive as possible, as special as possible, to encourage visitors to want to stay in your hotel. That's not possible with the includive pages you get with the on-line booking agents, so it needs to be backed up with a top quality web site of the hotel's own. It can then be linked from on-line booking agencies, so you get the best of both worlds. The Beaufort Hotel in the very quiet Beaufort Gardens was one of the first to define the Town House hotel concept, and has recently been refurbished to a very high standard. It is well located just a street away from Harrods, and very convenient for the up-market shopping areas of Chelsea and Kensington. There is a no-tipping policy, a free and well-stocked bar with champagne, and breakfast delivered to your room every morning. Around the hotel, in the rooms and common areas, are original works from the largest privately held collection of English watercolour paintings. This is a wonderful hotel to use as a base and to sample a refined version of top quality accommodation. The Amsterdam Hotel is very well situated in Earls' Court, less than one minute's walk from the underground line whisking you into the heart of London or straight from Heathrow airport. Every room is individually styled and decorated to a very high standard, and service is par excellance. If you are a serving member of the Armed Forces, or even an ex-member, you are able to stay at the Union Jack Club, opposite Waterloo station. This club and hotel has 280 bedrooms of all configurations and an excellent restaurant at prices well below normal London hotel prices. If you are a member of a foreign military unit you may also be eligible to stay here, you should check with your own people to find out about reciprocal rights. About the Oxford Hotel sector The problem for anyone wanting to visit Oxfordshire, or Oxford in particular, is that there are relatively few hotels for the huge numbers of tourists. Oxford hotels are at a premium, and they charge accordingly. Oxford is of course a very old city, packed with ancient and venerable buildings - it's partly what the tourists come to see - but it means there has never been room to build hotels in the middle of Oxford itself. We have several bed and breakfast clients in Oxfordshire and we know they get bookings from guests wanting to visit Oxford but unable to find reasonably priced hotels in Oxford itself. About the Corfu Hotel sector Corfu is struggling at the moment to find its true identity in the Mediterannean holiday market. The top five star hotels are slashing their prices in a bid to compete with downmarket destinations in other parts of the Med, and that is having a detrimental effect on the rest of the Corfu hotel industry and this pushes prices down right across the grades. No-one will stay in a two star hotel for the same price as a five star hotel. This is putting huge strain on smaller hotels throughout Corfu, driving down the prices they can charge to below economic levels. Corfu is a beautiful island with much to see, and Corfu Town is almost unique in its architectural style, there is only one other place like it - Venice. The Venetians ruled Corfu for a couple of hundred years at the height of their power and they have left their imprint. There are no canals, but the streets and the buildings are identical to what you would find in Venice itself. Spooky and enchanting. Instead of competing at the bottom end of the holiday market, Corfu could instead market itself as an upmarket destination, for tourists seeking some culture instead of looking for noisey nightclubs and binge drinking. There are plenty of opportunities for leisure pursuits as well, stunning beaches, scuba diving, sailing, as well as walking or hiring a moped to explore the inner island.
