SITE HOSTING
It is likely that your ISP (Internet Service Provider), the people who provide your email account and the way you connect to the Internet, will have also given you some free 'web space'. Most do, and the amount typically varies between 10 Megabytes and 50 Megabytes. The uses to which you can put that web space also varies from ISP to ISP. With some, you can only use the default web address they provide, although with some you can register and use your own domain name.
You certainly want to use your own domain name.
There are other reasons the free space might not be the best place to host your web site, and the main reason is 'bandwidth'. As explained on the Site Creation page, it is essential your site loads quickly. Bandwidth is very expensive and ISPs will save a lot of money by not providing as much bandwidth for the free web space as would be provided for paid-for web space. The consequence of that is people visiting your site may find it slow to respond and slow to load. That will not reflect well on you.
Other possible limitations on your free web space are restricted visitor statistics, essential for tracking the performace of your web site, and on the use of forms and special scripts which may also hamper what you wish to achieve with your site.
Please note, that Cyberpoint reserve the right to charge an additional £100 if you wish to use your own web space if that means we have to spend extra time configuring or setting up your site to do so.
The Site Hosting Package includes:
Sufficient web space
Domain registration and annual fee
Domain aliasing to web space and email account
Email serving
Email forwarding
FTP access
Notes: 'Sufficient web space' means just that, many ISPs offer pointlessly high amounts but at the end of the day a well designed web site should be compact and quick to download. Valid domain types included at these rates are .com .org .net .co.uk .org.uk and .ltd.uk as well as all the .fk domains if you are a Falkland Islands entity. Email serving is used if you have your own on-site mail server and wish to access email for all your addressees in bulk, otherwise you would want to use mail forwarding or even web-based email.
Important, this text is from Nominet UK: Cyberpoint acts as an agent in registering .uk domain names on behalf of clients. By registering a .uk domain name through Cyberpoint, you enter into a contract of registration with Nominet UK on these terms and conditions. This is a separate contract to any arrangement you may have with any third party for the provision of internet services. Please read before proceeding with your order.
Additional Set-up Options:
FrontPage - £50 (once)
E-Commerce - from £200 (once)
Notes: FrontPage would be useful if you wanted to maintain your own site once created, however this option does not include Active Server Pages (which can be provided at an extra charge). The difference between E-Commerce in the previous panel and again above is that the first is the cost of creating the pages incorporating e-commerce, and the second is the cost of configuring the site and setting up merchant accounts.
Additional Domain names:
Registration with 'parking' only - £20 (p/a)
Registration with full web space and email capability - £100 (p/a)
Notes: VAT extra.
